Design without a process is decoration. A repeatable, structured UX design process is what separates products that genuinely work for users from products that simply look good in a portfolio presentation. Stage 1: Discover, Understand Before You Assume

Stage 2: Research, Study Real Users

Research is the stage where you move from business understanding to user understanding. The goal is to build a clear picture of who your users are, what goals they are trying to accomplish, what barriers they currently face, and how they think about the problem your product addresses.

Research typically involves user interviews (five to ten participants per distinct user segment), contextual observation where relevant, review of any existing analytics, and competitive product analysis. The output is not a set of opinions but a set of evidence: quotes, observed behaviours, and patterns that represent reality rather than assumption.

Stage 3: Synthesise, Find the Patterns

Raw research data, interview transcripts, observation notes, analytics exports, needs to be structured into insight before it becomes useful. Synthesis is the analytical work of organising and interpreting research data to identify the most important patterns.

Common synthesis methods include affinity mapping (grouping observations by theme), journey mapping (plotting the user experience over time to identify peaks of frustration and delight), and persona development (creating evidence-based profiles of key user archetypes). The output of synthesis is an insight document: a ranked list of user problems, opportunities, and design directions that have an evidence basis.

Stage 4: Design, Create and Iterate

Only now, after understanding the user, the problem, and the evidence, does the design phase begin. It starts with low-fidelity wireframes: structural sketches of the interface that focus on layout, information hierarchy, and user flows without getting distracted by visual design decisions.

Wireframes are iterated quickly based on internal critique and informal user feedback. Once the structure is validated, the design moves to high-fidelity screens, full visual designs that incorporate the brand system, colour, typography, and precise spacing. This is where UI design skills are most intensively applied.

Stage 5: Validate, Test Before You Build

Testing with real users on prototypes before development begins is one of the most high-value activities in the entire process. A moderated usability test, five participants attempting to complete specific tasks on a prototype, will reveal critical problems that internal design review consistently misses.

The insights from testing feed directly back into the design. Issues identified at this stage cost a fraction of what they cost to fix post-launch. One or two rounds of testing before handoff is industry standard for quality-conscious product teams.

Stage 6: Deliver, Structured Handoff to Engineering

Design delivery is more than sending Figma files to developers. A professional handoff includes annotated screens with interaction specifications, a component library with all states and variants documented, design tokens (the technical representation of spacing, colours, and type), and an asset export package ready for implementation.

The quality of the handoff determines how faithfully the design is implemented. Ambiguous specifications lead to implementation decisions being made by engineers who were not part of the design process, decisions that often diverge from design intent in ways that damage usability.

Note on iteration: The six stages are presented sequentially, but professional UX processes are iterative. After delivery, post-launch usability testing feeds back into a new discovery phase. The process is a cycle, not a waterfall.
